WiSE Getaway - February 8-10, 2007

I'm part of the WiSE (Women in Science and Engineering) Learning Community and I had the opportunity this weekend to volunteer to have a high school senior girl experience the life of a college student. I, along with several of my friends, participated in this event and it was a great experience not only for the senior girls, but for me as well. I enjoyed getting to know each and every girl on a more personal level, and I am now looking forward to seeing most of the girls in the fall for they've decided that they want to become a cyclone. Friday night was by far the best night of the two and a half days the senior girls were here and that is where most of my pictures were taken. I had a blast and I plan on doing it again next year.

Taking the high school seniors "out on the town"
Dinner at Hickory Park

Stephanie Hubner and I. She was my assigned high school senior.
She's from Jordan, Minnesota and looking at majoring in Chemistry.

Allison, Ann and Yamille (pronounced: yah-meel) waiting until
we were to be seated. Yamille is from Puerto Rico and she has
a funny personality. She taught me a little bit about sign language.

Wendy Kleve and I waiting to be seated. She has become
another good friend of mine. She's majoring in Industrial Engineering.

These are all the high school seniors in our groupie. There was
a total of 60 seniors, but I know these girls were the best ones out
of the group. From left to right: Shelby (Allison's senior), Kimberly
(Ann's senior), Brittany (Laura & Ashleigh's senior), Tobey (Yamille's
senior), Lindsay (Wendy's senior), Antonella (Alex's senior), and
Stephanie (my senior).

The college hosts: Ashleigh, Ann, Wendy, Me, Laura,
Allison, Yamille and Alex.

Silly face picture!

Laura and I . She lives on my floor and is another good friend of mine.

Antonella (her nickname to me is Anton). She is so adorable
and cracks me up. She only weighs 90 pounds and she is
originally from Ecuador. She is for sure coming to Iowa State
in the fall so I'm looking forward to seeing her a lot next year.

Best of friends! I love this picture! Future roomies!

Ann and Allison once again. Cuties!

Another keeper! Like I said, I adore Anton!

Finally seated to eat. Group of happy girls!

I loved my ketchup so I posed with it.

Yamille and her one of a kind smile!

An Ann pose.

After dinner, we went to the last home wrestling meet. It was senior night and we won 35 - 6.

Wendy likes to take pictures with her mouth open.

The group of girls who went to the wrestling meet

Cael Sanderson, who is the head wrestling coach for Iowa State, is
an Olympic Gold Medalist wrestler with an undefeated record.
I was able to meet him after the meet was over.

After the wrestling, we went to the ice rink and played Broomball and ice skated.

Fun times!

Ann and I being our crazy selves.

Allison and Christina waiting for the party to get started!

The "looking down" pose. I like to take random
pictures of myself!

Wendy and her mouth... once again! lol

Cute! Sam who was a co-chair on the committee.
She's very nice and good hearted person.

Erin Casper and I before getting on the ice. She reminded
me of home because she acted like a Montanan to me.
Another good friend of mine!

Cute! Me and my best friend!

Finally on the ice! Photo-op!

Jenny, Wendy and I skating away... well kinda. lol

Too funny! I love this picture! I was on the ice while
they were in the stands.

Karly Klein, the graduate student who was in charge of Getaway.
She's graduating in May. I'm going to miss her!

Close up! Focus now...

Wendy (and her mouth) with her senior girl, Lindsay.

Allison and I hand-in-hand. She wanted a picture of us
like this so she got it. It is cute, I have to say.

Erin and I

Now the fun REALLY begins!
After we got done playing broomball and ice skating, a group of about 16 senior girls and hosts came to my room to have some fun. We played music and taught the senior girls how to dance... the "college way". I love dancing and as I learned, so did the senior girls.

There I go! I don't know why but I always where sunglasses when
I dance. I was rocking out pretty hard that night. Look at
Kimberly in the background! She's having fun! She is one of the seniors.

Oh boy... look at Ann working the twizzler! I'm teaching
Anton how to move her hips. She wanted to learn how to
dance so I gladly taught her my skills.

Allison, Alex and Yamille moving their bodies!

The senior girls watching Ann breaking it down.
I love the lips Ann!

Kimberly and I having a grand of a time.

Michelle showed up and that's when the future roomies
got together and really broke it down!

YEEEAH!

Now the seniors are really getting into it!
I had to encourage them greatly!

Yamille and her funny personality!

Look at Anton go! She was getting the hang of it by
the end of the night.

More work with the Anton.

And now... it's PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME! Watch the pros show you how to do the Peanut Butter Jelly Time dance.

Getting started with it...

enjoying the moment with the original four...

Now we're really into it!

"PEANUT BUTTER JELLY WITH A BASEBALL BAT!"
Look at Michelle doing the baseball bat!

Peanut Butter Jelly Time is the best dance ever!
Unforgetable!

I had such a great time with these senior girls and all the other WiSE girls that took part in it. I made such good friends in high schoolers and other ISU students and I look forward to doing it again next year. We have to continue the tradition of
Peanut Butter Jelly Time!
